5th ANNUAL BOP TIL YOU DROP

Bruce Forman, 5:30pm: We’re just about ready…the place is spiffy and it is eerily quiet. It is hard to believe this is the fifth one. Stay tuned, it promises to be a wild ride full of surprises…

BF, 7:10 pm: off we go! 15 people! G blues…7 guitars, 2 keyboards, 2 saxes, trumpet, 2 fiddles, and drums…where are the bass players!? A bunch of everything else waiting their turn…

Matt Hannas, 7:45p.m: So far it has been good I was the first drummer here. . .besides Mike McKinley. . .hahahahahahaha anyway I got a good drum solo and everybody really liked it. . . I think??? And I think I might leave later because I don’t think I could make it through the night with Grace, Anna, and Brittney annoying me. . .hahahahahahahahahaha. . .ok BYE!!!!!!!

Anna McKendry, 7:56pm: So here we are… first entry Matt made and he’s already made fun of us. Y’know, we are just lovely people and he’s jealous. (And he types really slowly. So nyehhh.) ANYWAYS. The music is lovely, everyone is excited and there is food on the way… so I hear. Everyone is reviewing the set list, looking at all the songs that we have, just to see what’s in store for us this evening. Patrick is kickin’ on the drums. Sounds great, and I can’t believe we’re just beginning! Check back later. See ya.

Matt Hannas, 8:03pm: Yeah its been ok until I said that I wanted to play “cold duck time” Tanner (the drummer) stole it and ran up there like a crazy person and sat down and started to play . . . so I told myself I would let him get his fame 4 once . . . because I get my fame everyday just walking down the street . . . hahahahahahahaha

BF, 8:20pm: cold duck time w/ about 20 people…gonna have to tame this beast, but don’t want to kill the energy, we’re going to need it later

Anna M., 8:41pm: Onto a funky version of ‘Jingle Bell Rock’. Fits the season, especially just after finishing ‘Santa Clause is Coming To Town’.

Grace McKendry, 8:51pm: Patrick’s a beast on drums. I don’t know what we’re playing. Someone typed up a set list but we haven’t really been following it. I can’t believe that this is just the beginning! Bruce just ended the song, and now we’re deciding on the next song. Sounds like another Christmas song. I guess it’s hard not to be festive when it’s only three days away from Christmas. J

Matt Hannas, 9:03pm: Its been fun we are playing something but I cant recall what it is but the pizza was BOMB!!!! Upstairs . . . thanks Mike the food is really good upstairs like I meen really goooood!!!!!!!!! . . . ok talk to you all tomorrow morning
BF, 9:15: satin doll after a train, an ellington medley…works for me. we’re 10% of the way there, no prob..noah freedman has taken up the bass, playin like a fiddle player…what a sport! thanks noah!!! clara is back again this year from the LA program (her third time), bigger and better than ever, a swingin rendition of ellingtonia from her now ½ size fiddle, can’t wait to hear her piano playing. Got a ton of guitar players, I hope they are saving some for later. gabe, dylan, grace--multi keyboarders (not like waterboarders,..at least yet!)

Anna M., 9:28: A little of bit of ‘Blue Bossa’ never hurt anyone… haha nice slower stuff going on now, everyone’s getting a bit tired. I believe it’s ‘quiet time’ in about half an hour. So I’ll go play for a while. And I agree with Matt, props to Mike for the food upstairs… the pizza is really good.

BF, 9:45: blue bossa goes a long way, bet it is not the last time I hear this one!

Matt Hannas, 10:07pm: WE CANT PLAY DRUMS ANYMORE!!!!!! BECAUSE ITS “QUIET” TIME HAHAHAHAHA . . . I JUST THINK THAT MIKE DOESN’T WANT TO GET CAUGHT BY THE COPS!!! HAHAHAHAHA JK MIKE . . .ANYWAY ITS BEEN FUN AND ITS TIME FOR MY BED TIME ANYWAY . . . IN THE WORDS OF MIKE “YOU NEED YOUR MILK AND COOKIES MATT . . .” HAHAHAHA OK TALK TO YOU GUYS IN THE MORNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! . . . BYE . . . BYE . . . . . BYE . . . . . . . . . . BYE . . . . . . . . . . GOOD NIGHT!

Anna M., 10:20: Bb blues acoustic sounds amazing. I’m getting a little sleepy, not gonna lie. Michael sounds wonderful as usual, using a mute because, as Matt mentioned, it’s ‘quiet time’. And I agree, Mikey probably doesn’t want to get caught by the cops. Since they are right next door and all. But acoustic is nice, Nate and Matt are planning a version of Au Privave which should be cool. It’s kinda awkward to type with two people over your shoulders laughing at the typos you make… The gang is all here, Grace, Brittny, Matt and Nate.

Grace M. 10 27pm: Matt needs to learn where the caps lock key is… and tanner’s still playing drums, just quietly.

Brittny S.,10:32: … im very proud that Tanner is playing quietly, although im afraid he may fall asleep soon. (like the rest of us)

BF, 10:44: we went acoustic…chameleon, with clarinet…klezmer…sounds good though, thinning out a bit, hope they hold. If it goes as per usual, around 3 or 4 people start trading axes, then solos, then avant garde…can’t wait. For now we got 9 people still playing..alex govan and storm nilson showed up, the cavalry has arrived

JR, 11:00: Alright 4 hrs under our belt after a nice acoustic Oleo and swingin Honeysuckle Rose. Nice horn players this year and all 3 Freedman brothers jamming away. Bop til you Drop rocks! I’ll be back b4 dawn as Gabe needs to nurse his cold!

Anna M., 11:33: Here we are… still… a nice version of Take Five going now. Our big sister came and brought us candy canes so we are all quite happy enjoying our Christmas treats. Tanner ran around earlier and ran straight into a parked car (and got a booboo.) Nowe we are all contemplating cramming onto a couch (even though Mikey says they aren’t for playing, they are for relaxing. Either way, they are comfy.

BF: 11:55: almost midnight, 25% of the way there, music is still sounding good, haven’t gotten into too many extended jams, the sustenance of the late (or early as the case might be) hours. Oleo just started up…go on y’all

AM., 12:21am: After midnight! Only…. A lot more hours to go. Some of us are upstairs trying to sleep with the rest of them (yes, I am in the bunch of lazy sleepyheads) keep it going with a nice jam.

BF, 1:15: well, here we have it, our first extended space jam, not too drowsy, the couches are getting lots use, mighty comfortable…music still going, only eighteen hours and forty-five minutes to go. I’m going for coffee

Matt Pardue wow its 2:09 and I’m still awake it started to get really good when we had all the graduates and me and Nate and uhhhh…. I forgot his name but oh well…..

Grace McKendry, 3:00am: there are only about five of us still awake. Bruce and Noah are still playing, and I’m about to go crash on one of the couches. Or not. I can’t really sleep.

BF, 3:50: I had a nice jam with storm and noah, man they sound great…no thinking just doin…then we got the metronome out, a steady soft drummer--you know what i mean!—hank took over. We seemed to have passed over the usual rhythm of the past four trips. Normally by 3 we go to changing axes and solo performances, but now, climbin on 4 we finally have our first solo, by hank, all blues and he’s soundin better that ever…sleep deprivation works pretty well, maybe that’s why those great big bands that lived on busses sounded so sweet. Now to musty…er…misty…”look at me”...on second thought…maybe better not!

BF, 4:15: clara is back!! Two fiddles and two guitars (tyler woke up) now we’re cookin with gas…put a pot on the stove and let’s simmer, 37% of the way there…but who’s countin?

Noah Freedman, 4:34: Anna’s playing a smoking version of All of Me. I had a good time jamming with Storm and Bruce and now she’s taking my spot. After a semester at college, staying up all night doesn’t seem nearly as daunting a challenge as it used to be. I think I’ll go have yet another slice of pizza. Mmmmm.

BF, 5:10: Dixie Dixon just arrived to sing some acoustic western-style Christmas tunes, with the cold and the rain out there it feels a lot more like the season than your usual California experience. Really pretty stuff, backed up by hank and tyler on guitars and noah and clara on violin. Jeremy, who is coming along like gangbusters on the guitar is playing bass, what a trooper. watch out for this kid!

Clara Rosenberg, 5:51 am: Doing some cowboy songs and sounding really good. Only four people playing – three are crashed out on the sofas. We have almost eleven hours done and a little more than fourteen to go. We’re almost running out of new songs to do – we’ve done All of me and Take the A Train at least twice.

Clara Rosenberg, 6:00 am: Eleven hours under our belt and we’re still going strong. Fourteen to go – wonder if anybody can stay up that long. I’m going to go back and play now. Sounds like G Major blues, but I’m not sure. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been going for so long that if this was a school day, I’d be waking up in half an hour. Only two players left now, and I hope that we can keep going and that another person comes – we really need another person.

Clara Rosenberg, 6:54 am: The sun’s coming up and we’re glad, because it means only about thirteen hours to go. In exactly six minutes, we will have completed our twelfth hour. I don’t know what they’re playing now, but Noah’s taking a solo and going great.

Clara Rosenberg, 7:45 am: We have twelve hours forty-five minutes done and twelve hours fifteen minutes to go. Fifteen minutes past the halfway point. Three people playing Equinox by John Coltrane. We have two guitars and one piano. More and more people can’t do anymore and are collapsing on the sofas. Total count now is four or five. Can’t wait for when more people come and we turn the amplifiers on – it will at least sound like there are more people playing. Just one more thing then: is anybody else going to make an entry or will I be doing the rest of them?

BF, 8:05: sunrise, a cold wet, gorgeous central coast morning. Lee Durley came in singin and bringin out the sunshine…white Christmas., bossa nova style. A couple of us got some needed z’s while hank , Jeremy, JR & clara brought up the sun. got a slew of bands slated for the morn and afternoon, plan to stampede across the finish line. Well past the halfway mark…ok 30 minutes or so! So glad to hear some beautiful singin…does this soul a lot of good.

MP, 8:15 am: didn’t make it fell asleep at like… 4:30 am and woke up like… 8:00. Well what can I say? First year and all…

Clara Rosenberg, 8:48 am: I think we set a Guiness world record – forty minutes of nonstop blues! We were going to play Blue Moon, but we looked in four fake books and couldn’t find the music anywhere. So much for that idea. Can’t believe we only have eleven hours and ten minutes to go. It seems like just two minutes ago, it was four in the morning and only four people playing. It seems like there are more late night owls than normal. Only two people playing now on trumpet and guitar. Only four or five people in the room now. Everybody went to get coffee five minutes ago.

Anna McKendry, 9:23am: Need more sleep. Can not compute. Must wake up. …It’s cold here. No bueno. Several people looking over my shoulders. Although I shouldn’t be so sleepy; I didn’t stay up all night. I ditched at about 11:30 with the rest of Skadoosh and pretty much rested till… now. (But now the onlookers are correcting me, saying that I just didn’t play music. Which is true. So I am lame; I ditched out early to rest. So props to the guys who stayed up all night. The true boppers.)

BF, 9:44: Len Wood, Board Member of JazzMasters just showed up with CDs donated by Arabesque Records, great titles by Ray Drummond, Chico Freeman and Jane Ira Bloom, it is gonna be a great Christmas for these young jazz players. On the music front: Bari Roberts is playing a set of swing songs, kids and pros sitting in…ramping up to the finish line…music still goin…no stops!

MP, 9:54: Ooooooooh it was fun messing with tanner trying to climb up the stairs in a sleeping bag I don’t have enough energy to play…. Yet…. but quite a few people are heading down to the beach and yeah…. ooooo a flute…

Clara Rosenberg, 10:14 am: We finally found the music for Blue Moon and now we’re doing Time After Time. We have done fifteen hours and fourteen minutes and we have nine hours and forty-six minutes to go. Must…get…rest…got here at four in the morning. I’ve only been up for about six hours, but I’m already EXHAUSTED.

MP, 10:33 am: tried to play kinda didn’t have it in me maybe in an hour or so. Played misty and some other song that I didn’t recognize well then again I kinda jumped in…

BF, 11:10: young Andrew Parker showed up, bass players are a valued commodity as you can imagine…

MP, 11:12: oh yes they are we had to put noah on bass last night that was exciting

MP, 11:45: still can’t bring up enough energy I did have a banana which helped we got a good groove going on here 10 mis past and it’s still going strong man this is good I’m gonna start to play soon too. Two horns a bass 3 guitars a drum set and they are done at 12:00 oooooo now its watermelon man plus violin and piano

BF, 12:10: made it past noon, less than eight hours to go. Watermelon man is struttin his stuff to a flashing light show…trippy man

NF, 12:23: Just woke up after a little beauty sleep. The music’s a little too loud for me to play now so I think I’ll just watch for a while. A nice and highly energetic blues jam is going right now, drums, bass, 2 guitars, 3 saxes, and keys. Man, I’ve got some nasty blisters from playin too much bass last night. I’m typing with my 3 uninjured fingers. Scott Brown showed up and should be playing soon.

BF, 12:25: noah is complaining about bass blisters? How long before he is complaining cause he’s got too many gigs?

MP, 12:33: I can play again!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Anna M., 12:34: Gabe is playing some nice solo pieces. “Melancholy Baby” and “There Will Never Be Another You” (along with ‘Phantom of the Opera) have been requested, although I’m not sure how many of these requests will be filled. Everyone’s a little tired but we just finished up a nice little funky jam session. There is an epic game of crazy 8s going on next to me. Gabe and Noah are now playing a nice slow tune while Stu and Scott get set up.

JR, 1:00 pm: Well seven hours to go. Though few have dropped most have bopped. Gabe and Noah trading 4s in duo setting sounds pretty sweet. Oh to be young and talented!

BF, 1:25: scott brown’s band playin now…mellow, tasty, soulful, got 25 or so in the audience too…ramping up for a big finish I can feel it…or is that the coffee?

AM, 1:32: Scott’s band is kickin it, and Noah jumped in on fiddle. These people are always so good… I kinda want to go up but also really not, because every time I do it shows how much I don’t know, haha. But maybe in a few songs. I hear ‘Cold Duck Time’ is on the list, so we’ll go up for that.

JR, 2:12 pm, Scott B, Andy W and Gary Regina treated all to a fine set: Xmas Tunes, Norwegian Wood, and a rousing Cold Duck finale with the young jazz masters. Definitely the place to be for some fine music!

BS, 2:27: Only 6 hours and 3 minutes left. Its going fast and then another year will be gone and another will be upon us. Thanks to everyone who has made this and Jazzmasters possible… Bruce, Mike, Scott, the parents, etc., etc.

BF, 2:47: yo BS, it’s 5 hours!!! But who’s counting? In a bit of a slow down between bands, Stu Reynolds is a comin with dino, dasher and heath, shuld be some moppin and boppin, the the blues band some gypsy swing and the last waltz…I mean bloooze…

AM, 3:04: Sounds like ‘All of Me’ is up next. It’s nice. Everyone’s pretty tired, but it’s fun. Gabe kickin it on piano, JR, Jeremy and Hank are on guitar and Erika is keeping it real with the drums. I like how we have to remember who is who by their initials… My question is, where are the posts from Mr. MM? (and not Mickey Mouse…)

BF, 3:25: Lee Durley is back! He brought Chloe to sing White Xmas…then Stu’s jam band commenced…here we go!

NF, 4:49: The finish line is approaching here. Kenny Stahl is playing with his band. The Rotary Blues Band has just arrived. 87.2666667% done.

BF, 5:29: who’s counting? It’s 90%!

BF, 5:40: rotary blues and in full swing…go on cats! Britney and Anna are going to sit in too, they’ve been up long enough, they got the blues

Matt Hannas, 5:44pm: So I just got here . . . I promised I would be here in the morning but I couldn’t make it L they have the “PRO” bands playing now and they sound really good!!! So that is all the news I have for now it’s been a pleasure J

Grace McKendry, 6:00pm: Only two more hours to go! I can’t believe that I’ve been here for that long. They’ve got professional bands playing now, and they sound awesome. Anna and Brittney managed to get to play with them.

Matt Hannas, 6:08pm: THE PROS ARE PLAYING SOME AWESOME HECKA FUNKY STUFF IT IS REALLY HEATIN THE PLACE UP!!!!! NOW THEY ARE PLAYIN THIS LITTLE SHUFFLE ITS PRETTY NICE . . . I ACTUALLY LIKE IT ITS NICE TO STEP IT UP A NOTCH ONCE IN A WHILE . . . OH YEAH!!!

Anna McKendry, 6:12pm: Carmel Rotary is really awesome. Their singer is really nice too, haha. Brittney and I sat in on three songs, all in G. They play really cool songs. Can’t believe it’s less than 2 hours till end! And I can’t believe I’ve been here this long… but it’s all been worth it. It’s been so much fun.

Matt Hannas, 6:14pm: Anna you cant say that it has been so much fun because you probably slept all last night hahahahahahaha anyway she is right it is fun!!!!! To listen to the music!!!!! J the people playing are really good!!!

BF, 6:25: Blues band knocked em dead, now Hot Club Pacific, then the jam-o-rama finale…boppin man!

AM, 6:41: Hot Club Pacific is really… jiving. I think I’ve used all the musical terms for ‘good’. All the bands that have been here today have been amazing, and I’m looking forward to the last jam!

Matt Hannas, 6:53pm: It’s been a fun ride through the jazz songs and stuff . . . I really like jazz masters It’s a fun way to get to meet new and interesting people . . . I think if anyone out there is interested in playing in a group they should definitely come to jazz maters Monday nights at 7pm at the camel youth center . . . its really fun!!!!!

BF, 7:40: the last blues is here, we are stretching it all the way home, had a visit from santa, I guess he got laid off from macy’s and was looking for some extra work. Well, it’s been fun, I need to thank all who played, helped and contributed, and especially mike mckinley (aka mikey) who keeps this program humming, thanks for keeping the dream alive for so many fine young people…you have my undying gratitude and admiration

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
